Phoenix Golf Society was officially formed in1997 but began in1996.
Four players Colin Mackenzie(jnr), Colin Armitage, Colin Mackenzie (snr) and Graham Mead formed the society and looked after its day to day running.
After a time, some of the inexpierienced members felt that when playing to the stapleford scoring system layed out in the rules of golf, they could not compete with the more concistent golfers and choose to form their own society making up their own format.
Graham who worked with the individuals agreed to help them and get the society underway.
Since this time, the Phoenix membership has risen to 47 members and we have selected a higher quality of courses to play than we used to, giving members a chance to play courses they may never have had a chance to visit.
We try to restrict a travelling time to courses to a maximum of 1 hour and minimise the cost of the day out.
We are also fortunate, that some of our contacts allow us to play their courses on days not usually available to societies.
The society was formed with the goal of encouraging people to take up golf and allow them to play some of the top courses under a competition format.
The handicap system has proved to be very accurate, players are cut as a % of their handicap and gain shots the on the same principle. This ensures that anyone shooting a huge score is cut to reflect this and makes the probability of reoccurance remote.
Unlike some societies ,where you can win player of the year by gaining points for finishing tenth, attendance, best player on par 3's etc, winning player of the year with Phoenix, can only be achieved through golfing merit and correct scoring.
If you wish to play golf in the format shown above, there are many societies in the area that can accomadate you.
